BP couple accused of tax evasion

Lead Summary

A Blooming Prairie couple faces 11 counts of tax evasion for allegedly failing to file income tax returns for a business they owned in Owatonna.
The Steele County Attorney’s Office has charged Michael Ray Tapp, 43, and his wife, Sheridan Jo Tapp, 40, with multiple tax-related felonies and gross misdemeanors. They appeared in district court Monday.
The Tapps once owned a salon on West Frontage Road in Owatonna called “Tapp the Sun.” The business was registered with the state in October 2004.
The couple is accused of willfully attempting to evade income tax laws by not filing income tax returns for 2009 and 2010. The criminal complaint claims the Tapps failed to pay more than $29,000 in income tax for both of those years.
Besides the accusation of failing to file tax returns, the Tapps are suspected of failing to remit sales tax that their business collected between December 2009 and April 2012. They collectively owe more than $45,000 in sales tax, penalties and interest, the complaint alleges.
