It’s typically a place where families gather to mourn the loss of loved ones, but on May 5 the atmosphere will be a little different.
Brick-Meger Funeral Home in Owatonna will begin year-long festivities commemorating 125 years of service to Steele County. The first event will be Thursday, May 5 beginning at 11 a.m.
Owner Glen Meger and his sons Michael and Brett hope to take advantage of the funeral home’s large parking lot utilizing the covered drive-up as a stage. However, if weather doesn’t allow, the festivities will take place inside the home.
The Steele County Pork Producers will be grilling complimentary pork burgers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be an afternoon of speakers, tours of the funeral home and a chance to win prizes on a Wheel of Chance.
Joe Schmit, veteran sports director at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, will speak at 1 p.m. He is considered a dynamic speaker with the right blend of humor. He has been an Emmy-award winning TV broadcaster for more than 30 years and professional speaker.
“He delivers an impact speech on how people impact your life and how that ties into end of life,” said Timothy Rice, marketing director for Brick-Meger. Schmit spoke at the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association convention a few years ago.
At 3 p.m., Al Batt of Hartland will share some humor with the crows. He is a writer, speaker, storyteller and humorist. Batt writes humor and nature columns for many newspapers and magazines.
Rice said the funeral home plans to do one event each quarter throughout the year as part of the 125th commemoration. The second quarter will be the Fourth of July celebration in the parking lot where folks can watch Owatonna’s fireworks. They are still developing events for the last two quarters of the year.
“We’re not celebrating, but we are trying to commemorate 125 years,” Rice said. “We’re not only marking the longevity, but focusing on the service to the community. This has been a staple of Steele County.”
There have been only three owners of the business during that period. The Megers have owned the funeral home since 2000.
