GFW piles it on with NRHEG

After a game that only produced seven points between both teams the week before, this week’s game resembled more of a football game once again with 67 points being scored between the two teams. Unfortunately, NRHEG came out on the losing end of a 52-15 contest against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Oct. 16 in Winthrop.
What was lacking the previous week offensively ended up coming to life again for the Panthers. Quarterback Blake Ihrke connected on 15 of 25 passing attempts for 146 yards. Kordell Schlaak chipped in one pass for 11 yards. But their efforts proved to be futile against GFW’s rushing attack. GFW piled on 483 rushing yards compared to NRHEG’s 24. In total offense, GFW smeared the Panthers 516 to 181 yards.
GFW jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and never really looked back the rest of the game. NRHEG came within two points in the first quarter when Ihrke completed a 48-yard pass for a touchdown. But that would prove to be as close as the Panthers would get in the game.
In the second quarter, GFW added another touchdown. NRHEG’s Ben Schoenrock added a 31-yard field goal to make the score 9-16 at halftime.
GFW exploded in the second half with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. NRHEG added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter with GFW coming out on top 52-15.
The loss ended NRHEG’s regular season at 3-5. The Panthers were scheduled to play Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in the first round of playoffs Tuesday afternoon in Janesville. The Bulldogs were 4-4 in the regular season.
