Huskies Dutton, Norrid compete at state

Lead Summary

Owatonna freshman diver Mya Dutton placed 28th and junior swimmer Logan Norrid placed 10th and 12th respectively at the Class AA State Swim and Dive Meet last week.
Dutton competed in the girls one-meter diving event, while Norrid swam in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly events.
Dutton competed first on Friday, Nov. 19, and came in 28th out of a field of 31 athletes.
Dutton’s 28th place finish did not qualify her for the dive finals and ended her stint at the meet.
“She did good. Exactly where I thought she would be, to be honest. I think we just bring her up here for her freshman year and we just expect her to have fun and see what she’s all about and then just build on that,” said varsity diving coach Kasey Anderson.
Dutton’s appearance at the state meet was the first in her career as a member of the Owatonna swim and dive team.
A fourth-place finish at the Section AA meet punched Dutton’s ticket to the state meet.
Norrid began the competition on Friday in the fifth event of the swim meet in the 100-yard butterfly race, followed by a race in the 11th event of the meet in the 100-yard breaststroke.
At the meet, Norrid placed 10th in both the butterfly and breaststroke events to qualify for competition at the final rounds the next day.
Her 10th place finish made her eligible for the consolation rounds of the tournament as only the top eight finishers are eligible for the state championship race.
Norrid’s times of 57.43 seconds in the butterfly and 1:05.60 in the breaststroke set new Owatonna high school records, breaking her previous school record times.
The next day Norrid returned to competition in the consolation rounds with another school record performance in the 100-yard butterfly by finishing in 57.37 seconds for 10th place.
Norrid finished the meet in the 100-yard breaststroke by placing 12th with a time of 1:05.60, tying her time from the day before.
Owatonna head coach Isaiah Fuller said that he was incredibly proud of Norrid and the way she showed up and competed, noting that her consistent school record-setting performances are special to watch as a coach.
Norrid earned her spot in the state meet by winning the section title in the 100-yard butterfly event and finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke event.
Norrid’s last race in the 100-yard breaststroke was the Huskies’ last official race of the 2021-2022 swim and dive season.
