Dean Goette wasn’t a runner, but he loved the Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms, and he loved Ribfest.

It may have been only natural, then, that the idea for the Go Goette 5K came out of a Blooming Prairie Youth Club (BPYC) Board meeting – and that the proceeds go toward a scholarship for Blooming Prairie High School (BPHS) graduates.

The BPYC hosts Ribfest every summer as a fundraiser to support its programs, which provide educational and recreational opportunities for school-age children.

“We discussed honoring Dean, because he was definitely a part of Ribfest events,” said Josi Christy, president of the board.

In fact, she said, “he helped teach me how to roast a hog overnight. He was instrumental in teaching us how to do that.”

The group discussed the idea with the Goette family, who supported it. Goette was 61 when he died Dec. 9, leaving behind his wife, Kim, three children, seven grandchildren and many more family and friends.

His obituary said his “abundance of love and support for his grandchildren was evident when he was heard cheering loud from the stands at their sporting events,” and that “he has been called one of the greatest Awesome Blossom fans.”

The idea to create the Dean Goette Blooming Prairie Youth Club Scholarship was a natural fit, Christy said.

“To give back to the kids? Dean would’ve been so proud of that,” she said.

The scholarships will go to graduates of BPHS who plan to pursue post-secondary education in the trades, business, military, and/or agricultural field.

The inaugural Go Goette 5K run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. July 30, the morning of Ribfest. Even the starting point is intentional.

“Dean was a big lover of America,” Christy said, “so (the run) will begin at the Veterans Memorial, and will be an all red, white, and blue theme, with eagles. His brother is coming to sing the national anthem.”

The color theme will continue with the red and blue powders that onlookers toss onto the runners as they pass.

While the intent is to make the event a tradition, this year’s registration deadline is early, so organizers know how many to plan for.

The $20 entry fee for adults includes a shirt/tank. The fee is $10 for kids 5-10, which includes a shirt. Kids 4 and under are free. The shirts can be picked up at the registration table on the day of the event.

Deadline is July 15.
