The excitement has been building over the past month ever since the announcement of a sports broadcasting legend shifting gears this fall.

Beginning in this week’s edition, Roy Koenig, who has become known as the “Voice of Owatonna Sports” joins the Steele County Times as a sports analyst/columnist. In addition, he is doing play-by-play for Owatonna Live and KOWZ Radio.

Fans are in for a rare treat this fall as Koenig hits the fields with his 30 plus years of expertise and commentary regarding Owatonna sports. Each week he will be producing a special Sports Wrap column showcasing the past week of sports highlights and other noteworthy sports items involving Steele County athletes.

In addition, readers of the Steele County Times will also get the benefit of sports editor Johnnie Phillips, who begins his second season of sports coverage.

“Johnnie and Roy are going to pack a powerful punch every week with our sports coverage,” said Rick Bussler, publisher of the Times. “This particular team will give readers the touchdown coverage they want from local high school athletics.”

Koenig will be inducted into the Owatonna Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 16.
