James Grass, 91, Owatonna
James “Jim” G. Grass, 91, of Owatonna passed away, Wednesday, July 14, 2021.
He was born on July 31, 1929 in Lemond Township to George and Erma (Altenburg) Grass. He graduated from the Owatonna High School in 1947.
After high school, Jim started working with his father on the family farm. In 1951, he was drafted into the Army Paratrooper division and received an honorable discharge due to needing to help back at the family farm.
On Jan. 6, 1952, he married Erliss Anderson at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. They raised three children: Cindy, Buz and Julie and nephew Pete on the family farm. Jim worked his whole life on the farm and drove truck until he was 85 years old.
His hobbies included hunting and fishing especially in Northern Minnesota, raising and exhibiting purebred Spotted hogs and purebred Simmental cattle at county and state fairs, and spending time with his family especially enjoying his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jim was a lifelong member of the Associated Church and trusted in Jesus Christ.
He was a great supporter and volunteer of the 4-H and FFA programs and coached 4-H general livestock judging teams. Jim was a member of the Minnesota Pork Producers, Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association, Minnesota and National Spotted Swine Association ,Minnesota and National Simmental Association, was honored for 50 years of exhibiting livestock at the Minnesota State Fair, was Inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame, was inducted into the Steele County Livestock Hall of Fame and was an Honorary Life Member of the Minnesota State Agriculture Society. Jim also received a Distinguished Service award from the National Barrow show.
He is survived by his children, Buz (Cea) Grass, Julie (Kim Glover) Grass, nephew Pete Grass; two grandchildren, Jake (Lindsay) Grass and Mandi (Andy) Resler; six great-grandchildren, Madeline, Kaylee, Jeremiah, Lydia Grass, Blake and Creedence Resler, nieces, nephews and many special cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Erliss; daughter, Cindy (LaVern) Martin; two brothers Robert and infant Glen.
Funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at the Associated Church with the Rev. Coqui Conkey presiding.
