OHS boys win Big Nine meet, girls 4th

Lead Summary

The Owatonna boys cross country team had a successful Big Nine Conference Meet, earning first place in the team rankings with 38 total points.
The next highest score in the meet was that of Mankato East with 51 total points.
The win is the Huskies’ second in a row as the team also won the Mankato East Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
Controversy struck during the start of the boys meet, as a false start made all of the runners return to the finish line and start again.
No athlete was deemed the culprit of the false start, and the race resumed with a full field.
Three top-five finishes propelled the Huskies to victory at the meet, with seniors Preston Meier, Connor Ginskey and Brayden Williams.
Finishing first for the boys squad was Meier, who came in second place with a time of 16:17.
The time is Meier’s second-best of the season, behind his 16:15 at the Mankato East Invitational where he set a new personal record.
Meier is no stranger to the top of the leaderboards as the second-place finish is his second of the season, also boasting a first-place finish to begin the season at the Austin Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 31.
Ginskey finished right behind Meier in third place with a time of 16:49.
Ginskey’s third-place finish is his second consecutive third-place finish.
His time of 16:49 is one second slower than his time at the Mankato East Invitational, where he also finished third.
Williams rounded out the pack at the top of the leaderboard, finishing in 16:58 in fifth place.
The fifth-place finish almost kept up the trend of consecutive same-place finishes, as Williams finished in fourth place at the Mankato East Invitational.
Also finishing for the Huskies were junior Trevor Hiatt, 11th place, junior David Smith, 17th place, senior Brenden Drever, 18th place, and freshman Jack Sorenson, 25th place.
The Owatonna girls team narrowly secured a fourth-place finish at the meet, edging out Mankato West with 131 points to West’s 133 points.
The Huskies’ girls team did not feature a top-ten finisher, however, sophomore Anna Cox earned an 11th place finish with a time of 20:24.
Senior Jeni Burtis came in after Cox, securing 19th place with a 20:35 finish.
Rounding out the pack were senior Jaci Burtis, 28th place, sophomore Carsyn Brady, 29th place, senior Laura Stevensen, 44th place, eighth-grader Paige Thompson, 50th place, and freshman Audrey Hudock, 68th place.
The two teams’ next meet will be at home at Brooktree Golf Course on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 2:55 p.m.
Competing at the meet with Owatonna will be Farmington, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Northfield, Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall and Rochester Mayo.
