OHS gymnasts place 6th at state

The Owatonna gymnastics team took sixth place at the Class AA State Meet last weekend, finishing with 142.325 team points.
The Huskies came in sixth behind St. Michael-Albertville, Stillwater Area, St. Cloud, New Prague and champions, Wayzata.
“They came out and competed very well – definitely competed to the best of their ability. We went out strong on beam with three sticks. On the floor, they went out and had a real nice floor rotation. We’ve been struggling on vault recently, and then on bars, they put themselves in a position to be on the podium possibly,” said Owatonna head coach Evan Moe.
Owatonna’s 142.325 team points were comprised of 36.850 points on the vault, 33.800 points on the uneven bars, 34.775 points on the beam and 36.900 points on the floor.
The Huskies started the meet on the beam and got off to a hot start as freshman Averie Roush scored a 9.150-point routine in the Huskies’ first routine of the meet.
Roush’s nine-point routine was the Huskies’ only nine-point score. The team finished with scores of 8.950, 8.825, 7.850 and 7.625 to total 34.775 points.
Owatonna then rotated to the floor where the Huskies had their best performance of the day with four nine-point-plus performances.
Eighth-grader Kendra Miller led the Huskies with a 9.300-point floor routine while other scores included 9.225, 9.220, 9.175 and 8.825 to make up the team’s 36.900 points.
The next rotation for Owatonna was to the vault where Owatonna had its second-best team score of the meet.
On the vault, it was freshman Jozie Johnson who led the team with a 9.4125-point average.
Owatonna’s last event was the uneven bars where the Huskies posted their lowest score of the day at 33.800 points.
Roush and sophomore Emma Johnson led the Huskies with matching scores of 8.525 points.
In the state individual meet, Emma Johnson earned the team’s highest overall placement, taking 23rd place with 34.350 overall points.
In individual events, Roush finished in 16th place on the floor with 9.300 points, Kaityln Cobban finished in 14th on the beam with 9.100 points, Emma Johnson finished 47th on the uneven bars with 8.075 points and Jozie Johnson finished in 11th on the vault with 9.475 points.
