NRHEG junior guard Sidney Schultz recently broke the 1,000 career point mark as a member of the Panthers’ varsity squad.
The milestone came during the team’s 83-14 win against United South Central.
Schultz, who has been a member of NRHEG’s varsity squad since her eighth-grade year, knew that she was close to the mark to begin the season, but did not know when she surpassed the milestone.
“I knew I was kind of close, but I didn’t know how many points. I don’t keep track of points during the game. Actually, I banked a three in and then my teammate Sophie Stork came up hugging me and I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ And then she told me,” said Schultz.
Schultz’s 1,000th point made her the 13th NRHEG girls basketball player to accomplish the feat.
Schultz joined Stork in reaching the milestone to give the Panthers two active 1,000-point players on the roster.
NRHEG head coach Onika Peterson said that it has been special to watch Schultz’s progression over the years as a Panther.
“It’s super fun always having my dad there. He and Onika are always giving me tips, but I never take it personally. I love all of it. It’s really comfortable having him there, always on the bench,” said Schultz.
Schultz attributed her ability to surpass the 1,000-point milestone to her teammates over the past four seasons.
As a part of a team that has recorded two wins with more than 80 points and is undefeated through four games, Schultz said that the team chemistry has played into everyone’s success.
“I’m always looking for my teammates. They’re always pushing the tempo as well. I’ve got some great teammates to work with, so it’s going pretty well.”
According to Schultz, being a part of a program that has seen multiple 1,000-point athletes in recent seasons has played a big part in her goal-setting during her high school career.
Schultz said that witnessing former Panther Carlie Wagner and current teammate Stork both pass the milestone, as well as her sister Jade Schultz provided great examples for her to follow.
Schultz still has plenty of time to add to her career totals with her senior season yet to come.
