Owatonna Police Captain Jeff Mundale will step up July 1 to serve as the department’s chief.

Mundale replaces Chief Keith Hiller, whose retirement takes effect June 30. He was selected following a nation-wide search, according to the city. The city said it advertised the opening on local, state and national job boards. Interviews were conducted in April with city council and leadership, community leaders, and a neighboring police department. A forensic and public safety firm also conducted a leadership and management assessment.

“We are excited to see Jeff transition into this role as he continues advancing law enforcement and public safety services through partnerships, problem solving, teamwork and community engagement,” City Administrator Kris Busse said in a press release Monday morning.

Mundale previously served as a patrol commander, sergeant and patrol officer, and has completed the FBI National Academy leadership and other law enforcement and leadership training programs. He has a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from Minnesota State University Mankato and is currently enrolled in the University of Virginia’s master’s degree program for Public Safety.

His move will also prompt other departmental promotions, Hiller said.

“Jeff has an unwavering commitment to the citizens of Owatonna and serves with pride, compassion and integrity,” he added. “His education, training, experience and the relationships he has established within our community have prepared him to succeed as our next Police Chief.”

The city said its police department is dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in professional law enforcement and is committed to providing a comprehensive program of education and enforcement services.
