Carl and Denise Wieman of Owatonna are gearing up for this summer’s MS River Road Run, but first they need your help. They are seeking donations to help MS. Over the past 21 years they have personally raised more than $90,000 for the fundraiser and hope to add to that total again this year. Submitted photo

Carl and Denise Wieman are back at it again trying to raise money for multiple sclerosis.

Over the past 21 years, the Wiemans have brought in more than $90,000 for the MS River Road Run. And now the retired Owatonna couple is hoping to add at least another $4,500 to that total.

The 38th annual run will take place on Aug 19-20 beginning in Monticello. Motorcyclists will be riding on scenic back roads to Rockford, Lyndale, Tonka Bay, Chaska and winding into Lakeville for lunch on Aug. 19. After the break, they will continue to Jordan and cruise along the Minnesota River before ending up in Mankato for the night. The route has been designed by the Wiemans.

The purpose of the MS run is to raise money to aid in the search for a cure for MS, according to Carl Wieman. Nearly 1 million people are living with MS in the U.S.

“We ride for one reason—to help those with MS,” said Wieman. “We ride because we can, and for those that cannot.”

Wieman said the money raised goes to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter, Minneapolis, which is a nonprofit voluntary health organization dedicated to advancing the cure, prevention and treatment of MS.

He pointed out that the society would not be able to move this incredible work forward without the support of generous donors.

“Together we are stronger than this disease,” Wieman said. “Together we fuel breakthroughts. And together we ensure every person affected by MS has access to the resources, support and community they need.”

The Wiemans got involved with the run back in 2001 while Denise’s niece, Lori Serbus, was battling MS. She died from complications of MS in December 2004.

“We want to help others like Lori that have this devastating disease,” Carl Wieman said.

He added an anonymous donor has offered to donate an extra $250 if they surpass the $4,500 goal and an additional $250 if they go over $5,000.

Donations can be sent to the Wiemans at 524 Glendale St., Owatonna, MN 55060. Contributions are tax deductible. For further information, they may be contacted at deniseandcarl@yahoo.com.
