Berg returns to baseball after injury

Owatonna’s Tayte Berg was pushing himself to the limit performing power cleans in the weight room as part of the Huskies’ strength and conditioning program early this spring when he felt a snap that immediately spiked his adrenaline levels.

As the senior went to catch the weight to complete the rep, he felt his left wrist pop. What followed was an immediate sense of dread.

“As soon as it happened, I kind of knew. I started like freaking out and crying and stuff. I had a ton of adrenaline because we were maxing out our weights, so it wasn’t really the pain that got to me. It was more that I knew my season was over,” said Berg.

Berg’s diagnosis was a double fracture in his glove-hand wrist – a season ending injury for the 2025 senior.

The accident occurred just one week before Owatonna’s first game of the regular season, affording the senior next to no time to rehab his injury for a return.

Physical therapy sessions became part of his routine while we shifted into his new role as a dugout leader for the Huskies.

“After I got over the fact that I wouldn’t be playing this season, I knew I had a new role to take on being a leader from the bench… I tried my best to be a role model for the guys,” said Berg.

Owatonna’s 2025 squad went on to finish 18-6 overall, and while Berg was unable to step onto the field with his teammates, his presence was still felt.

The rehab process that occurred throughout the season went smoothly and after being given the green light to return to practice, Berg began to set his sights on making his summer league debut.

After discussing his status with the coaching staff, he found his name in the lineup for a tilt against Rochester John Marshall.

With his confidence and swing back in full force, Berg made his first plate appearance and proved himself and everyone else right by ripping a double to the outfield.

According to him, the summer experience has made up for lost time as he gets the pleasure of playing with his current and former teammates all while prepping for the next chapter of his career.

Berg will enter 2025-26 as a member of St. John’s University’s baseball team – cementing a lifelong dream to continue his career into college.
