Blooming Prairie girls basketball started its season 1-0 after winning a tight 33-30 game against Waseca last Friday.
The visiting Bluejays got off to a hot start with two three-point shots early in the game to jump out to a small lead, but the Awesome Blossoms never let them take full control of the game.
With neither side able to gain much traction on offense, both teams hit the locker rooms with Blooming Prairie holding a slight 23-22 lead.
Waseca’s commitment to shooting three-pointers proved to be the Bluejays’ downfall as Blooming Prairie focused most of its attention attacking the post with its physical play.
While the first half was already a low-scoring affair, both sides were able to shut one another down even more effectively in the second half, scoring just 18 combined points.
The major difference in the game came down to free throws, many of which swung the game in Blooming Prairie’s favor in the second half.
The Awesome Blossoms attempted 31 shots from the charity stripe and connected on 15 shots, outscoring Waseca 15-9 in the metric.
Waseca’s hesitance to attack the post proved costly as the Bluejays made just three, three-pointers over the course of the game with Blooming Prairie nailing two of its own.
Claire Schwarz led all Awesome Blossoms with nine points while Catelyn Bartlett followed close behind with eight points.
Blooming Prairie will host its first conference game of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 3, when the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights come to town.
The Knights opened their season 0-1, suffering a 52-44 loss on the road at Southland.
