Byron Reed, 57, Ellendale

Byron L. Reed, age 57, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on June 16, 2025, at his home in Ellendale. 

Byron was born June 27, 1967, to James and Priscilla (Briggs) Reed in Pierre, S.D. Byron graduated from TF Riggs High School in Pierre in 1985. He went on to attend University of SD and University of CO-Boulder. 

After college, he returned home to Pierre and worked for the Capital Journal and then went on to spend the majority of his career with Walmart, taking him to a number of states. He enjoyed the friends and colleagues he made there throughout the years and also the flexibility the job gave him to pursue his hobbies.

Byron was an avid SD historian with a special interest in collecting postcards/postmarks that told the story of towns that have come and gone over the years. From the time he was young, he shared his dad’s love of coins and stamps, and he was a member of the Pierre Coin & Stamp Club and the SD Coin & Stamp Association. 

Byron loved seeing the world through his windshield and recently accomplished his goal of visiting the 48 contiguous states. Byron had a special love of wordplay and was always up to a Scrabble challenge and was quick with a pun. His family and friends will miss his witty personality and friendly chuckle.

Byron was cherished by his family who are grateful for sharing his life. He is survived by his mother Priscilla Reed of Pierre, S.D.; sisters Linda (Gary) Nelson of Sturgis, S.D., and Susan Reed of Pierre; and nephew Benjamin Nelson of New York City. 

He was preceded in death by his father.
