Darlene Hoffman, 90, Owatonna, obituary

Darlene Gertrude Hoffman, 90, passed away from COVID on Sept. 20, 2024, at Traditions II in Owatonna.

Darlene was born to Joseph and Gertrude (Waltz) Hoffman on Aug. 7, 1934, in Canby, Minn. She grew up in Canby until the age of 10 when the family moved to Owatonna. She graduated from Owatonna High School in 1953.

In 1954, she moved to St. Paul, where she worked a variety of jobs including one at Liberty State Bank, until she returned to Owatonna to live with her aging parents. After her parents passed, she moved into an apartment in downtown Owatonna and lived there until 2010 when she was diagnosed with kidney cancer and a brain tumor. She survived operations for both, after which she moved into the Owatonna Care Center until they closed in 2015. It was then that she moved to Traditions I and then to Traditions II in 2023.

Darlene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owatonna, and often walked to Mass when she lived downtown. Darlene enjoyed walking, as she never learned to drive, and walked the halls of Traditions II until her last days.

Darlene never married. She is survived by her sister Joan (Hoffman) Doyle of Apple Valley; sister-in-law Nancy (Root) Hoffman of Eagan; six nephews: Terry, Dan, and Tim Doyle and Jon, Marc, and Jeff Hoffman; and three nieces: Mary (Doyle) Fortman, April (Hoffman) Sorenson, and Christine (Hoffman) Ray; who live in Alaska, Florida, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ray and Tony Hoffman, Joan’s husband Frank Doyle, and Ray’s wife Rose (Sobrek).

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 512 S. Elm Ave., Owatonna. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Owatonna.

Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church. The family would like to thank the staff of Traditions I & II, Brighton Hospice, and Minnesota Prairie County Alliance for the care they provided to Darlene.
