Derek Larson, 34, Owatonna

Derek David Larson, 34, of Owatonna, passed away on Nov. 16, 2024, from a six-year battle with brain cancer.

Born on Feb. 27, 1990, Derek was known for his caring, thoughtful, and private nature, coupled with a sharp, sarcastic wit that brought joy and laughter to those around him.

Derek attended Dakota Elementary at Minot AFB, N.D., followed by Douglas Middle School in Box Elder, S.D. He later moved to Owatonna, where he completed his education at Owatonna High School and Riverland Community College.

Professionally, Derek started his career at McDonald's in Owatonna during 2005 and was promoted to a shift manager during his junior year of high school until 2012. He then transitioned to a role in information security at Amesbury Truth Hardware Corporation in 2011, where he worked diligently until his passing.

A man of many interests, Derek was passionate about movies, gaming, biking, walking and being outdoors. He cherished the time spent with family and playing with his favorite niece Briella. He enjoyed working on his Corvette and embarking on driving adventures with his close friend, Brian Vaillancourt. Derek was always eager to do new activities with friends and family. Derek's sense of humor and intelligence made him a beloved figure among his family, friends, and colleagues.

Derek is survived by his parents, David and Lisa Larson; sister, Chelsey Larson; niece, Briella Larson-Mills; grandmother, Mary Fretham; aunts and uncles, Laurie Meister, Donald Howey, Carol Blaisdell, Ronnie, Gary and Brenda Robinson, Todd Larson, Tammy and Mike Dolney; and numerous cousins. Derek is deeply loved and will be forever missed.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents LaVerne Larson, Woody and Judy Meister, and Gordy Fretham.

Services to honor Derek's life will be held at Brick-Meger Funeral Home, 1603 Austin Road, Owatonna, on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024, at 11 a.m. Friends may greet the family on Tuesday Nov. 26, 2024, starting at 9:30 a.m. until the time of his memorial service.
