Huskies’ youth camp sets record attendance

The Owatonna High School football team hosted its annual youth camp last week and saw a record-setting group of 276 athletes attend.
According to Owatonna assistant coach Matt Skala, the numbers forced the future Steele County gridiron stars to split into three groups on the practice fields.
“It was outstanding. It was our first year at the new facilities, so it provided some new, welcomed challenges with what we can do with the open space. We even had some kids who aren’t currently playing football come out. I think it was a great way to give them a taste of how fun football can be,” said Skala.
However, the youth athletes weren’t the only ones enjoying the days in the sun.
Former Huskies football alumni showed up to help coach and compete against the current varsity squad in some seven-on-seven action.
“It’s the best part. I know Coach Williams mentions it when all the kids huddle up, but we’ve assembled some of the best athletes and coaches to ever put on the pads or wear our colors. We have guys coming down from the cities each night to be a part of camp. It’s special,” said Skala.
The youth camp officially kicked off football season in town, as the high school squad began summer practice on Monday, Aug. 12.
All eyes will be on the Huskies when they open the season at Hastings on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
“We had a great summer again, so the excitement is really high. There are always high expectations. We’re starting up now, and we’re just excited to take it one week at a time,” said Skala.
