It went down to the final minute before the top-ranked Owatonna Huskies football team regained the lead to keep its unbeaten record alive during a dramatic comeback victory Friday against Mankato West.
With 1:09 left in the game and trailing 17-20, the Huskies punched through another touchdown and extra point kick to go on top 24-20 over the Scarlets. It was a nerve wracking and tense game for Owatonna as it trailed throughout most of the second half. It proved to be the stiffest competition yet for the Huskies this season.
The game-winning drive started at the West 47-yard line. Quarterback Brayden Truelson connected with Payton Beyer on a 27-yard pass to get into the red zone. Tanner Hall ran in from 10 yards out with 1:09 to play. Sam Henson hit the point-after, giving the Huskies a 24-20 lead.
The win extends the Huskies (6-0) winning streak to 25 games over the past three seasons. It also launches Coach Jeff Williams into a tie with former Indians coach Jerry Peterson for the most victories in Owatonna High School history at 179.
Hall led the Huskies with two touchdowns while Matt Williams added one touchdown. Sam Henson connected on a field goal and a pair of extra point kicks.
Truelson led Owatonna’s passing attack by connecting on 9 of 17 attempts for 166 yards.
The Huskies’ rushing attack came from the speed of Hall, who had 33 carries for 168 yards. Sol Havelka added 6 carries for 22 yards while Truelson had 3 carries for 16 yards.
Beyer led in receiving with 73 yards. Williams had 60 yards and Isaac Oppegard had 41 yards.
On defense, Isaac Gefre had 10 tackles, including 7 solos. Keenan Young added 6 tackles while Carson DeKam and Matt Seykora added 4 each.
Carter Debus blocked an extra point attempt by Mankato West in the fourth quarter.
Owatonna clinched the outright Big Southeast Red Division title for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
The defending state champions will host Mankato East during Parent’s Night Friday. Owatonna will close out the regular season at Rochester John Marshall on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
