Gail Johnson, 84, Owatonna
Gail Marie (Thurston) Johnson, age 84, passed away peacefully at home on March 30, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Brick-Meger Funeral Home, 1603 Austin Road, Owatonna, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 12:45 p.m.
Gail was born in Blooming Prairie, to Nick and Dorothy Thurston, and moved to Ellendale, with her family when she was 10 years old. She grew up alongside her brother, Gene, and carried a quiet strength, kindness, and caring nature throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald Johnson, and their three daughters, Dawn (Joel) Born, Denise (Doug) Herkenhoff, and DeAnn (Rick) Koss. She was also a proud grandmother to Melissa, Christopher, Steven, and Cody, and great-grandmother to Quincey.
Gail and Don built their life together in Owatonna, where they raised their family and made many lasting memories. Gail worked at Federated Insurance for more than 30 years, beginning in 1972, and was known for her strong work ethic and steady presence.
She found joy in family trips to Lake Ada, time spent with loved ones, and caring for the many dogs who were part of her home over the years. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Humane Society and had a special love for animals.
Gail loved spending time not only with her family, but also with her friends, and she was blessed with many meaningful friendships throughout her life. She also never passed up a chance to enjoy a little chocolate. More than anything, Gail will be remembered for her warmth, her quiet generosity, and the love she gave so freely to those around her.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Steele County Humane Society or Sacred Heart Catholic Church Owatonna.
