Hugh McCarren III, 63, Oklahoma
Hugh Thomas McCarren III, 63, passed away at his home in Oklahoma on May 23, 2026.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 10, 1962, to Hugh and Elizabeth (Necas) McCarren.
Hugh grew up in Westfield, N.J., attending various schools. During his school years, he was a member of the swim team and also played football. After graduating from high school, he made the decision to enlist in the United States Army, where he served for two years in Germany.
After being honorably discharged, he moved to Minnesota, where he met Stephanie Buckingham. Together, they had two children, Kelly and Cresse.
He worked as a car salesman for many different dealerships throughout his career, most notably Owatonna Ford, CarTime, and World of Wheels. Hugh was a true people person who never met a stranger. He loved talking with others and had a natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His friendly personality, sense of humor, and gift for conversation left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Hugh had a passion for writing and was known for his way with words. He enjoyed expressing himself through his writing and had a talent for telling stories and sharing his thoughts. He was also an avid sports fan, especially when it came to cheering on the Minnesota Vikings.
More than anything, Hugh loved his family! He showed them the importance of perseverance, resilience, and never giving up, showing by example how to live a full and meaningful life. And then there’s Sammy Jo, his Service Dog. Sammy was the true joy of his life, and their companionship was something words cannot explain.
He cherished his grandchildren and found great joy in spoiling Lake and Kemper with surprise mail, and talking all things sports with Jaxon.
Hugh was proud to be a veteran and carried that pride throughout his life. He had a deep passion for helping fellow veterans, particularly those struggling with PTSD. He understood the challenges many veterans face and was always willing to offer support, encouragement, and a listening ear.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Elizabeth McCarren.
Hugh is survived by his two children, Kelly (Derrick) LaMotte and Cresse McCarren; and his three beloved grandchildren, Jaxon, Lake, and Kemper.
Friends may greet the family at Brick-Meger Funeral Home on Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 4–7 p.m. At 7:15 p.m., military honors will be provided by the Steele County Funeral Unit.
