Medford veteran wrestling head coach Dennis Whitman announced he will be stepping down from his head coaching role this upcoming season after leading the Tigers for 26 seasons.
Whitman’s resume includes multiple individual state champions as well as leading the Tigers to a fifth-place team finish at the state team tournament in 2023.
Notable athletes Whitman has coached throughout the years include Tommy Elwood (2024 state champ), Charley Elwood (three-time state champ), Willie VonRuden (2020 state champ), Curt Maas (three-time state champ), Tyler Yule (2009 state champ), Mitch Kuhlman (three-time state champ), Brent Reinhard (2001 state champ) and Blaine Kuhlman (2000 state champ.)
Medford has only produced one state champion outside of Whitman’s tenure as head coach, with John Mikel winning in 1984.
According to the Guillotine.com, Whitman’s career dual record is 209-194-4, good for a 72.23 winning percentage and 83rd on the Minnesota all-time career records list.
