When the doors open for agility and obedience classes at Paws 4 Fun in Owatonna, it’s hard to tell who’s having more fun: the dogs or trainer and company owner, Susan Bernhart.
Bernhart’s passion for helping her fur friends reach their full potential is something that has not only won her medals, but also the hearts of the owners that trust her with their dogs.
“I can see how their confidence builds… I think it’s for all dogs. I’ve had every breed come through here. I’ve seen basset hounds run through the course with their ears flopping on the ground,” said Bernhart with a laugh.
Whether owners are hoping to have their dogs learn simple obedience or train to compete in agility competitions, they can rest assured that they’re in good hands.
Bernhart has been a certified trainer for 14 years – nine in Owatonna – and during that time, she has won 16 master agility championships between her two dogs, Ninja and Miko.
She says the key to success with her training is not just technique; it’s time together.
“I became a dog whisperer not only because of the bonds I have with my dogs but because I have a bond with everybody’s dogs… I think that’s the best benefit of this training. The owners get to spend so much time with their dogs doing something that they love – something that really stimulates them and makes them happy,” said Bernhart.
Prospective clients can also take comfort in the fact that Paws 4 Fun offers group classes and private sessions, allowing new members the opportunity to work with their dogs in a comfortable environment.
Classes range from $105-235 dollars and vary between class size and experience level.
Paws 4 Fun is currently offering courses in life skills, introduction to agility, intermediate/advanced agility, behavior modification, aggression and reactivity, scent work, AKC Canine Good Citizen, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppies, and tricks and fun runs.
“My dog, Joey, has learned to be more independent, move farther away from me in training, and just go faster and faster. It’s a great place to come play and socialize with other people who have dogs. It’s a nice and huge place, so there’s plenty of room to run,” said Waseca resident Roxie Eaton.
With a new location at 1605 State Ave. NW, Paws 4 Fun has been fully capable of housing a full-sized competition agility course, suitable for any breed that comes in the doors.
“My students come from every life stage you can imagine, from young children to retirees. Many of the dogs actually bark with excitement when they arrive. An agility course is to dogs like a playground is to children. They love it and they can’t wait to come back,” said Bernhart.
