State's top team keeps rolling by beating stubborn Medford

Lead Summary
, , ,

ONE is an all-important number.
It stands for No. 1 football team in the State of Minnesota. After two wins in an abbreviated football season this fall, the Class 1A football champions of 2019, the Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms,  are holding that position of acclaim.
Coach Chad Gimbel's Blossoms used a passing game again to topple the up and coming Tigers of Medford. The Tigers refused to give up, scoring eight points in the last 1:33 of the game to pull within 26-15.
The arm of junior quarterback Drew Kittelson was again golden as he threw four touchdown passes in the victory.
Kittelson now has thrown nine touchdown passes in two games. He threw for five scores in the Awesome Blossoms' 37-22 win over Rushford-Peterson.
Wide receiver Mitchell Fiebiger was the target for two of those touchdown passes, one to start off the game and another at 8:27 of the second quarter.
The other touchdown passes went to Brad Simon and the final touchdown scored by Cole Christianson. Both came in the final quarter.
The Blossoms scored the first touchdown of the game, a 32-yard strike from Kittelson to Fiebiger. The extra point by Collin Jordison was good.
The Tigers roared back with some fireworks of their own. Jack Paulson scored on a 78-yard run. The point after touchdown was good and the score was knotted early in the first quarter.
Medford threatened to go ahead late in the first quarter on a 40-yard run by Paulson. A holding penalty on the Tigers erased Paulson's apparent touchdown.
The Awesome Blossoms went ahead at 8:27 of the second quarter on a Kittelson pass to Fiebiger]. The PAT by Carson Breneke was good for a 14-7 Blossoms' advantage.
Neither team could muster a scoring drive in the third quarter.
Senior Christianson set up a scoring drive with a long catch early in the final quarter. Kittelson then hit Brad Simon on an eight-yard scoring pass. The try for extra point was no good.
"We knew they were a good club, and we knew we were going to have our hands full," remarked Coach Gimbel. "Drew is doing a nice job for us, going 19 of 24 for 298 yards," he added.
"We gave up some rushing yardage we should not have," said Gimbel. "Their running back (Paulson) had good speed and we were reaching out for arms," Gimbel theorized.
The teams were very close in total yardage.
Fiebiger had a good game both ways, commented Gimbel. He managed to get wide open on couple of routes. Cole Christianson made important catches, a slant, and then the TD.
The Blossoms' next opponent will be Lewiston-Altura on Friday night at McFarlin Field in Blooming Prairie. The Blossoms have never played Lewiston-Altura. The Cardinals beat Goodhue, 53-8, last week.
The Cardinals run a wing-t offense, pulling lots of misdirection, "We have to be disciplined, do some double team blocking, and we have to turn the ball inside. They set up plays with the fullback.
The Cardinals were beaten the first week by Chatfield.
