James Van Ravenhorst, 82, Owatonna
James “HOSS” Van Ravenhorst passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at Benedictine Living Community in Owatonna.
James was born July 24, 1942, in Manchester, Minn., to George and Hazel (Wynia) Van Ravenhorst. He attended country school until his father passed away, at which time he was needed on the family farm. James later completed his schooling, earning his GED.
In his early 20s, he married Joanne Larson, and together they had four children: Tammy, Beth, Vicky, Mike. They later divorced.
James met Diane Brigham in the winter of 1976. They were united in marriage March 18, 1977. Together they raised Darin Brigham and four years later Kelli was born.
Hoss worked many jobs, including tow truck driver, deputy sheriff, bus driver, and delivery driver for pizza, eggs, pharmaceuticals and the People’s Press. Most of his career, however, was at Harland’s Tire and Auto Services.
Hoss was a very active member at Grace Baptist Church in Owatonna and volunteered in many positions in any way he could. He enjoyed camping, fishing, socializing, doing cross words puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, watching National Geographic, listening to polkas, having morning coffee with the “Coffee Cowboys,” and spending time with family and friends. He attended farm shows, county fairs, and most certainly, events of his grandchildren.
James is survived by his six children; 13 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Diane; his parents; and five siblings: Effie, Henrietta, Dick, Everna, and Delbert.
Friends may greet the family from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at Brick-Meger Funeral Home in Owatonna and one hour prior to the service at the church the following day. Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Matt Tolosa presiding.
