Lorraine Johnson, 100, Owatonna
Lorraine Johnson, 100, of Owatonna, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Lakeshore Rehab Center, Waseca.
Lorraine was born in Aitkin, on Feb. 24, 1925, to Stanley and Effie Nix. She graduated from Aitkin High School in 1942. After graduation, Lorraine worked at the Aitkin Independent Age newspaper as the bookkeeper and other roles until her marriage and move to Owatonna in 1946.
She met the love of her life, Sandy Johnson, on Prom night in May 1942. They were engaged in the fall of 1942, just before Sandy left to serve in the Pacific during WWII. Upon his return, Lorraine and Sandy were married on Jan. 17,1946 in Aitkin. They had five children and were married 67 years. Upon marrying, they farmed in rural Owatonna for three years before moving to Aitkin. In 1952, they returned to Owatonna. In 1961, they purchased the home where Lorraine lived until early this year.
She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church beginning in 1947. She cherished the many friendships she developed over the years in various bible study groups. She served on Trinity 75th Anniversary planning committee. She enjoyed quilting with the Trinity quilter’s group and also made many quilts for children’s organizations.
For many years, years after the children were grown, Lorraine prepared income tax returns for many Owatonna families.
Lorraine and Sandy had a large vegetable garden for many years which became a flower garden in later years.
She enjoyed traveling with Sandy, and in retirement they visited all 48 lower states and most of the provinces of Canada.
Lorraine shared a great love with Sandy and their children and also to extended family and many friends.
Survivors include daughter, Barbara (Ron Bagley) Brindle of St Peter; sons, Craig of St. Paul; Steve (Debbie) of Lakeville; Mike (Mary) of Lake Crystal; Brad (Karen) of Owatonna; daughter-in-law, Jennie Runte of Lindstrom; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one on the way; sisters Virginia (Roy) Van Horn and Arlene Deuermeyer; many nieces, nephews and their children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sandy, her parents and brothers: Wendell Nix, Robert Nix, Wayne Nix, Rolland Nix, Cyril Nix, and sisters: Agnes Miles and Evangeline Sexter.
Friends may greet the family 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the Brick-Meger Funeral Home, Owatonna and one hour prior to the funeral at church. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Owatonna with interment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Owatonna.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Steele County Historical Society.
