About 10 years ago Maddie Meyer was a golfer for the Huskies. Now she’s the head coach for the girls. “I’m super excited. I saw the posting and I told myself that I needed to do this. It’s going to be a great opportunity.” She was looking for a way to give back to the community.

During senior picture day, the 2015 grad had a moment with legendary coach Keith Bangs, who passed away late last year at the age of 81. “I happen to get a picture with him that day and he told me, ‘Maddie, you are going to be a coach someday…’ I actually told his wife that during the visitation,” said Meyer.

However, at the time, “I never thought it would happen. But I look back and it was meant to be.”

She wants to give the current players the same experience she had. “The team overall made it super fun. We had van trips that we would go to our meets. We spent a lot of time together. So, we got to know each other quite well. I’ll never forget those memories,” she said.

“Golf is a hard sport. There are definitely some challenges. I want to make sure that at the end of the day the girls had fun, got to know some other golfers from different towns, and make the memories.”

She worked at Brooktree Golf Course and the Owatonna Country Club during high school and came back after college to help at kids’ camps. She also coached Owatonna Basketball Association basketball. Being a head varsity coach will be new, “But I know that I’ll have a lot of support behind me.”
