REFLECTIONS

What should I write a column about this week? That’s a question that often faces me week in and week out.
I consider myself a weekly columnist for the Steele County Times. Space is limited some weeks, thus a Times column may need to be held and run the next week.
Columns can be written on a variety of subjects. They can be written on a subject that the columnist is familiar with or on a subject the columnist wishes to learn more about.
Columns could cover these areas:
• Sports
• Government
• Family
• Exercise
• Health
• Personal happenings
• Pets
• Recreation
• Tips on buying clothing
• Tips on buying a new car
• Vacation ideas
• Gardening ideas
• Music
• Movies
As you can tell, there lots of column ideas out there.
Bubble wrap
My wife, Judy, is one of my best suppliers of ideas. She is so positive. “Why don’t you write about how caring this community is,” she said.
I receive lots of reaction to columns about my big/little accidents.
‘What did you do now,” readers ask.
When I broke my ankle in three places, Judy suggested she put me in bubble wrap.
I once wrote a column about exploring a word, “extrapolate.’” It has an extensive meaning. “Extrapolation refers to estimating an unknown value based on extending a known sequence of values or facts…”
This word is popular with politicians and with TV news people.
Breakfast with Hunter
We had the opportunity to have breakfast with Major League Baseball player Hunter Pence. That connection was due to a short trip to Milwaukee with friends Dawn and DuWayne Gross to see Pence play for the San Francisco Giants. Hunter happens to be the nephew of Dawn.
This happening turned into a good column.
Another popular column was made possible by my granddaughter, Kaley, who accompanied me to Dallas, Texas, to participate in 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
We met with Dallas police Detective James Leavelle, who was manacled to Lee Harvey Oswald when he was shot by Jack Ruby.
Kaley helped write a couple of columns with me.
Now, this column about columns can be considered a Reflections.
