Thomas Wencl, 78, Medford, obituary

Thomas Wencl of Medford died Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Owatonna Hospital.

Friends may greet the family Thursday, March 20, 2025, from 4-7 p.m. at Medford Funeral Home, 310 E. Central, Medford, and Friday March 21, beginning at 9:30 a.m., with a procession to the church at 10:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, March 21, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 205 2nd Ave. NW, Medford.

Thomas Joseph Wencl, also known as Tom “Tuba” Wencl, was born March 1, 1947, in Owatonna to Paul and Angeline (Matejcek) Wencl. He grew up in Medford and graduated with the Medford High School Class of 1965.

After high school, he attended Austin Community College and then Mankato State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1969. He began his career as an accountant at Owatonna Manufacturing Company and continued there until he began his own business, Wencl Tax and Specialty Personnel Services, in the early 1980s.

Thomas married Jean Adams on Sept. 3, 1994, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Owatonna.

In 2016, he sold his accounting business. Thomas also farmed throughout his life.

Thomas enjoyed music and played the tuba in several local old-time bands. He enjoyed farming and collecting toy tractors. Most of all, he really loved visiting with people and going to coffee with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; sister Barbara Wencl, St. Paul; brothers Paul Wencl and Greg (Patti) Wencl, both of Medford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law Ray Gulden.
