Waypa recognized ahead of clash with Cretin

Owatonna Head Coach Bob Waypa has been at the forefront of the boys’ soccer program since its inception in the 1998, and last weekend he was honored at Lincoln Elementary field ahead of the team’s clash with Cretin-Derham Hall (CDH.)
Current players and alumni took time ahead of the opening kickoff for a photo opportunity, showcasing multiple generations of athletes that Waypa has influenced and helped build since the beginning of his career.
“It’s amazing. Like Marc Achterkirch always says, ‘We make impacts as coaches that we don’t even realize.’ People come back, and for these moments to see everyone again… it’s special. Anyone we’ve ever had in this program; I’ve been blessed to work with such a great group of guys. It’s the best part of coaching,” said Waypa.
Owatonna’s game against the Raiders was an uphill battle.
CDH entered the game with an undefeated 6-0-2 record, with its two draws coming against very strong Woodbury and St. Thomas Academy teams.
Owatonna fought to stay competitive, but the Raiders’ possession play and quick passing ability was unlike any look the Huskies had seen so far this season.
Multiple through balls and crosses from the wing entered the Huskies’ penalty box, allowing dangerous scoring opportunities throughout the opening 40 minutes.
CDH took a commanding 3-0 lead before the Huskies finally broke through and scored on a deflected own goal by the Raiders.
Neither side was able to score for the remainder of the game, giving CDH the win.
Owatonna’s next game will be on the road against Rochester John Marshall at Rochester Mayo High School on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
