A 65-game losing streak came to an end in Medford last week when the Tigers beat Parnassus Prep 87-81 in front of the team’s loyal fanbase.
The Tigers’ offense was firing on all cylinders all night, and head coach Steve Boehning was loving what he was seeing out of his team leading up to the big win.
“We had a pretty good overall approach to that game… It’s awesome to see [our players’] passion to get better regardless of outcomes or expectations. We have guys coming in willingly on their own. They’re putting shots up before school and doing extra film sessions. Their dedication is awesome,” said Boehning.
Medford’s win started off with the team going up by 20 points at halftime behind stellar play from junior guard Landon Seiler.
Parnassus Prep managed to close the gap significantly in the second half, but Boehning said his star player was not going to allow the scoring lead to change hands.
“We’re learning to win. Other guys stepped up and played really well, but I also think Landon had some key plays. He wasn’t going to let us lose at times when the game was slipping,” said Boehning.
Seiler’s dominance included a record-setting 47-point performance, creating a new mark for the most ever scored by a Tigers athlete in a single game.
The junior could be seen taking in the moment for a brief second after the final buzzer sounded before his teammates swarmed him to celebrate.
Medford’s first win since Dec. 19, 2022, brought not only a sense of elation to the home crowd, but also meant more to a coach who has witnessed his athletes develop in a major way over the past few years.
“It was a fun night. Fun for the guys. Especially our older guys like Landon, Orion [Heintz] and John [Hora] who have played varsity since their freshman years and shouldn’t have had to play a varsity schedule their sophomore year but stuck with it and endured it. Our fans really embraced the win and now we’re trying to make this the norm,” said Boehning.
Medford’s next game will be on the road against Lyle/Pacelli at Pacelli High School on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
