Bacteria levels lead to Lake Kohlmier closure

Lake Kohlmier, closed, owatonna, bacteria

Lake Kohlmier in Owatonna will be closed until further notice due to high bacteria levels from test results received on July 25, 2024.

According to a city press release, levels in a lake fluctuate based on various factors such as heavy rain or wind, time of day, amount of people visiting the beach, beach wildlife, and physical characteristics of the beach. No specific cause for the spike in bacteria has been identified.

Lake Kohlmier will remain closed until the bacteria levels return to the range recommended by the Minnesota Department of Health.

City staff will conduct frequent testing to ensure the lake area is reopened as soon as possible, the release noted.

Some structured programming scheduled at Lake Kohlmier has been cancelled or reformatted.
