Clair Coughlin, age 88, of Osseo, Minn., passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023.

 

He was born at home in Steele County to Tom and Mary Coughlin. Clair will be remembered for his servant’s heart and a deep commitment to family, friendships, faith and education.

 

Clair lived a life marked by a decades-long career in education. His bachelor’s degree (UST) and master’s degree (UND) provided the foundation for a lifelong career of teaching. He taught science at Jordan High School (Jordan, Minn.) and mathematics at Central High School (Grand Forks, N.D.). The majority of his career was spent as a mathematics professor at North Hennepin Community College, where he was a founding faculty member. In December 1993, after 27 years, he retired as Professor Emeritus. His passion for education expanded as he served on the Osseo School Board for 12 years, thoughtfully leading the district through a period of rapid growth and expansion.

Clair joined the Knights of Columbus as a young adult and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Brooklyn Park. He taught religion classes, lectured, and was a Eucharistic minister. His faith was center in his life and was a pillar of support throughout his 88 years.

Clair married Pauline Butler, in August 1957, and they have six children. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grand father and friend. Always gentle. Always kind. Always compassionate.

Survived by his wife of 66 years, Pauline; their six children, Lynn (Michael) Hagen, Mary Clare (David) Sargent, Ellen (Matt) Kastl, Steven (Lorraine) Coughlin, Margaret (Brian) Kleven and Tim (Kimberly) Coughlin; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Kathleen Murphy; sister-in-law, Loretta Coughlin and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents and siblings, Leo, Mark, Myrtle, Francis (KIA), Paul, Howard, Gerald, Charles, and Robert.

Mass of Christian Burial at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 9100 93rd Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. prior to mass. Lunch to follow mass.
