Darlene Gathje, 74, Owatonna

Darlene Kay Gathje, 74, of Owatonna, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, June 23, 2023.

Darlene was born on May 24, 1949, to Rexford and Delores Barr in Winona. She graduated from St. Charles High School in 1967. She worked for Mayo Clinic for several years prior to her marriage to Martin Gathje on March 13, 1971. The couple then moved to Owatonna in 1972, where she worked as a homemaker, and raised four children.

She had many hobbies and interests over the years. She enjoyed having dogs for family pets. She enjoyed going camping with family and fishing. She loved sewing, gardening, canning, baking, and going to garage sales (always to find a bargain). She enjoyed traveling in the camper with Marti across the U.S. for several years.

Her greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed watching her children grow up and start families. She babysat her grandchildren for many years.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Martin of 52 years; her children: Darin (Michelle) Gathje of Owatonna, Doug (Jenny) Gathje of Owatonna, Laurie (Chris) Drake of Waseca, and Randi (Becky) Gathje of Stevens Point, Wis., and her dog, Levi. She is survived by her sister, Sharon Volkman of Red Wing. Ten grandchildren also survive her.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Friends may greet the family from 4-7 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2023, at Brick-Meger Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Parish Rosary will be recited prior to the start of the visitation on June 30, at 3:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
