Dean Jensen, 84, Deland, Fla.

Dean Jensen, formerly of Owatonna, died under hospice care at his home in Deland, Fla., on Monday, June 12. He was 84.

Born on July 9, 1938 in Austin, son of Leona and David Jensen and grandson of C.T. and Hattie Mittelstadt of Owatonna, he largely grew up in Owatonna, was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church and is a 1956 graduate of Owatonna High School.

He was a three-sport athlete in Owatonna. He played basketball and baseball throughout high school and football as a senior, lettering in all. He was a stand-out basketball player, was named to the all-state team, and held the OHS scoring record (37, and that was before the three-point score change) for decades.

He played varsity basketball for Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and graduated from there in 1960. He played basketball for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) off-season while in high school and college and continued to play for AAU after he moved to Denver following college graduation.

Jensen was also a gifted golfer. He won the amateur title in the Denver City Open while a scratch golfer. He continued to golf daily for years while living in Colorado, North Carolina and Florida and wherever he visited.

He was in sales and was a project manager for a variety of business companies in Denver and then in Florida where he also was a general contractor. He also published a book about CB radio and its terms.

He is survived by his two children: daughter, Jane Jensen of Homestead, Fla., and son Stephen Jensen and his wife Sherry of Lakewood, Colo., and their three children, Calvin, Isaac and Sabrina; two brothers, David Jensen of Crofton, Md., and Dale Jensen (Bonnie) of Blaine, three nephews, four nieces, six first cousins and a number of extended family cousins.

No funeral service is planned.
