Donald Weinke, 89, Owatonna

Donald Charles Weinke, 89, of Owatonna, passed away peacefully Oct. 27 surrounded by family.

Born April 19, 1936, in Fond du Lac, Wis., Don was the son of Ervin and Jeanne Weinke. A lifelong learner and devoted professional, Don earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison before completing his law degree at William Mitchell College of Law. He went on to serve as general counsel for the engineering, manufacturing, and logistics department at 3M in St. Paul, where his integrity, insight, and steady leadership earned him the respect of colleagues throughout his long and distinguished career. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Don was deeply committed to his community. He served for many years on the City of West St. Paul Planning Commission, helping to thoughtfully shape the place he called home, and on the board of the East Side YMCA in St. Paul, where he championed opportunities for youth and families. Don will be remembered for his sharp mind, quiet generosity, and unwavering sense of fairness. He had a deep appreciation for learning, good conversation, and the company of family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judith; stepchildren Robert Olds (Pamela) and Melissa Dunn (Dave); granddaughter Brynja Riehm (significant other John Bromley); brother Steven Weinke (Patricia) and their children; and many others whose lives were enriched by his wisdom and kindness. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Owatonna Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, at 11 a.m. to honor Don’s life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Good Shepherd, Minnesota Public Radio, the Humane Society, or a favorite local charity in memory of his lifelong commitment to community service. Don’s life was marked by purpose, compassion, and integrity—qualities that will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
