Huskies finish Davis Duals 2-2

Owatonna hosted its annual Davis Duals Tournament over the weekend where it finished 2-2 against a strong mixture of talent.
The Huskies were able to score wins over local challengers Medford and NRHEG, but came up short in tough duals against Apple Valley and Lakeville North.
“Our coaching staff couldn't be prouder of how the team performed this Saturday. All the teams came in trying solidify their lineups, and we are no exception. With four weight classes still in flux, everyone was picking up slack through every dual. This is going to be a season that relies predominantly on our sophomore class of varsity wrestlers, but it's always nice to end each dual with senior captains Riley Kreeger, Carter Flatland and Kaden Keller. Our younger starters are some of our more experienced nationally, so don't be surprised with the skill level coming from Gabe Robb, Miles Aase and Mason Sorenson too,” said Owatonna Head Coach Derek Johnson.
The Huskies’ first win came over NRHEG where the team dismantled the Panthers 41-19.
NRHEG jumped out to a 7-0 lead thanks to a decision win by Owen Schlaak and a major decision by Grahm Jacobson, but the Huskies rallied soon after.
Owatonna junior Jacob Wilson got his team on the board with a 9-2 decision that sparked a four-match winning streak for the Huskies.
Following Wilson’s lead were Gabe Robb, Owen Flatland and Jacob Ryks – all of whom won by bonus points to take the lead.
Robb and Flatland both gathered six points by earning falls while Ryks put on a near-perfect display earning a 16-1 technical fall to put Owatonna ahead 20-7.
Owatonna senior female competitor McKayla Selle made her 2025-26 dual debut in a match against NRHEG’s Eli Hendrickson at 152 pounds, but lost by fall to move the score to 20-13.
The Huskies answered with two falls by Colton Glende and Riley Kreeger before NRHEG’s Ryan Schlaak retaliated with a fall at 189 pounds, pushing the match score to 32-19.
Owatonna’s Carter Flatland iced the dual with a 14-7 decision at 215 and before NRHEG was forced to forfeit at 285 to end the scoring at 41-19.
Sandwiched in between the Huskies’ two comfortable wins were some tough matches against Apple Valley and Lakeville North.
Owatonna held an early lead against the latter with wins by Miles Aase, Wilson and Robb to jump ahead 16-12 through 133 pounds, but the Panthers scored a dual-shifting rally in the middle weights.
From 139-160 pounds, Lakeville North captured 20 points via two falls, a technical fall and a decision to regain the lead at 32-16.
Owatonna nearly recovered from the deficit and trailed just 32-28 after falls by Kreeger and Carter Flatland, but the Panthers dug deep for two wins at 215 and 285 to close out the dual 42-28.
The Huskies had a much more difficult time against Apple Valley in a 48-20 loss.
Despite leading 9-3 after wins by Aase and Wilson, the team dropped 36 consecutive points from 127-172 pounds with four losses by fall, a technical fall, a major decision and a decision.
Carter Flatland and 285-pounder Kaden Keller won their two matches to close out the dual on a positive note for the Huskies, but had no ability to influence the outcome.
Owatonna’s final dual of the day was a 54-9 blowout win against the Medford Tigers.
The Huskies were dominant rattling off 10 straight wins to open the match, with exception of a double forfeit at 127 pounds.
Winning for Owatonna were Max Sorenson (107 – forfeit), Aase (114 – forfeit), Wilson (121 – 17-1 technical fall), Robb (133 – 0:52 fall), Owen Flatland (139 – 3:04 fall), Ryks (145 – forfeit), Selle (152 – forfeit), Glende (160 – 8-0 major decision), Kreeger (172 – 20-15 decision) and William Frantesl (189 – 0:46 fall.)
The Huskies’ shutout win was spoiled by strong efforts from the Tigers’ Luther Johannes (215 – 2:13 fall) and Conor Wilson (285 – 7-4 decision.)
Two Huskies remained undefeated when all duals had ended for the day, as Wilson (4-0) and Carter Flatland (3-0) put on outstanding performances in front of the home crowd.
Up next for Owatonna is an invitational at Woodbury High School on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 9 a.m.
Meanwhile, Medford and NRHEG will go head-to-head in a dual at Medford High School on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
