Huskies head toward bright future

A sea of blue caps stretched across the arena floor, as over 300 hundred Owatonna seniors sat ready to graduate.
Owatonna High School principal Mark Randall welcomed the graduating students and thanked them for all the work they had done over the last several years in their school and in their community.
He was joined on stage by members of the school board, retiring faculty members, as well as four teachers.
The four teachers were selected by the senior class to represent Owatonna educators. They were: Katie Dahnert (fourth grade at Washington Elementary), Stacy Wobschall (fourth grade teacher and dean of students at St. Mary’s), Michelle Nelson (fifth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary), Polly Shives (Language Arts teacher at OHS).
Two students addressed their peers during the ceremony. Student body president Grace Valen spoke first followed by Ethan DeKam.
Poised and confident, Valen reminisced about the memorable moments the class had gone through together, including a fire in the high school auditorium and a flu outbreak.
“You’re destined for something great as long as you believe,” she reminded her classmates, “Don’t just dream about changing the world… actually do.” Valen will be attending Augustana University in South Dakota.
DeKam, who will be attending Saint John’s University in the fall, congratulated his classmates on reaching a major milestone, but told them “today will soon be over.” He encouraged his classmates to make the most of all the “today’s” they had ahead of them.
