Jay Evert, 55, Owatonna
Jay “Jaybird” Leonard Evert passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, at Mankato Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born on April 29, 1970, in Faribault, to Leonard and Elinor (Elliott) Evert. Jay attended school in Owatonna and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1988.
For the past 27 years, Jay was employed at Cemstone in Owatonna, where he built many lasting friendships and took great pride in his work.
Jay—known affectionately by many as “Jaybird”—had a gift for making people feel welcome and cared for. His home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay, a meal, or simply good company. He loved being around kids and was known for his kindness, humor, and easygoing nature.
His hobbies included watching sports—especially the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and NASCAR—hunting, fishing, telling long jokes, enjoying bonfires, playing bean bags, and spending time outdoors. Jay loved nature and the simple joys of being outside.
Jay is survived by his wife of 28 years, Shalaine; daughter, Jaylin (Dustin) Evert; son, Joseph (Courtney) Evert; sisters, Jodi (Loni) Reko and Heidi (Steve) Palmer; in-laws, Stephanie (Tim) Ritter, Steve (Kacie) Johnson, and Keith Dinse; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Elinor Evert; baby Evert; sister, Kim Evert; sister-in-law, Vonna Dinse; and in-laws, Richard and Jonna Johnson.
Friends may greet the family on Friday, Nov. 7, 2025, from 4-7 p.m. at Brick-Meger Funeral Home, Owatonna, and one hour prior to the service. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, at New Life Community Church, Owatonna, with Pastor Joel Stauffer presiding.
