Layton L. “Duke” Meyer , 84, Kasson

Layton L. “Duke” Meyer passed away at Season’s Hospice in rural Rochester on Friday, May 27th, 2016 at the age of 84.  Blessed has been the life of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Layton was born on July 14th, 1931 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Albert R. and Esther M. (Kirkwood) Meyer. He attended and then graduated from Foley High School in 1949 where he was a standout athlete, also enjoying the opportunity to play amateur baseball throughout Minnesota.  He moved to Kasson after graduating and worked at various jobs prior to going to working and retiring from Culligan after 28 years of service. Layton married Dolores E. Vail on April 19th, 1953 and they made rural Kasson their home until the times of their deaths.  “Papa” Meyer deeply loved his family – his three children and their spouses, his five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  He enjoyed following sports, especially when he was able to attend the softball, baseball, volleyball, or soccer events involving his grandkids.  He was an avid gardener who frequently shared the bounty with his friends and neighbors.  His hobbies included hunting deer and upland game, playing golf and card games, woodworking and framing, and watching / reading anything with a “Western” theme, particularly John Wayne films or Zane Grey works.
“Duke” is survived by his children; sons, Lon (Sara), Lee (Ann), and a daughter, Lorelle (Glenn) Betha, all of the Kasson Mantorville area; grandchildren, Jessica, Katelyn (Peter) Christopherson, Ashleigh (Tom) Bergman, Charlton, and Stephanie; and three great-children, twins Natalie and Evan Meyer, and Cohen Christopherson; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Dolores, his parents, his sister Elaine and his brother, Paul.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8th, 2016 at St. John’s Lutheran Church located at 301 8th Avenue NW, with Pastor Randy Fett officiating.  Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kasson.  There will be no reviewal and friends may call from 1 hour prior the day of the funeral.  The family requests memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Season’s Hospice in Rochester.
