Leona Mae Volkert, 91, Kasson
Leona Mae Volkert, 91, of Kasson, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.
Leona was born Jan. 15, 1927, in Afton Township, Stillwater to Herman and Luella (Pechuman) Heuer. She married Elroy J. Volkert on June 21, 1947 in Afton Township Stillwater, and they farmed in White Bear Lake, Minn. and Roberts, Wis. They were charter members of the St. Croix Riders Saddle Club.
Leona and Elroy moved to Hayfield in 1971, where they farmed. In 1986, they moved to Queen Creek, Ariz., where Leona worked at a local school cafeteria and boarded horses. Leona took pride in maintaining a homestead, driving important passengers by stagecoach in parades (including the code talkers of WWII and Iron Eyes Coyote), and enjoyed playing cards with friends and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Marie (Gary) Booth of Glenwood City, Wis.; Betty (Dennis) Edgar of Kasson; and Carol Eques Von Buettner-Brooks; three grandchildren, Wesley Booth, Eric (Sarah) Edgar, and Kelly (Kevin) Gentz; seven great-grandchildren, Madalyne and Amara Booth, Ethan and Jacob Edgar, and Kiara, Micah and Tenley Gentz; sister, Viola Miller and brother, Walton Heuer, along with nieces and nephews.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Elroy in 2003, her parents and three infant siblings.
The memorial service was held Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kasson with Rev. Nirmala Reinschmidt officiating.
