Merlyn Madery 88, Owatonna

Merlyn Madery of Owatonna passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

He is survived by his wife Mary Jo, and two sisters Arlene Louks and Arlys Lindahl (Merwin). Merlyn is also survived by children from a prior marriage: Merle (Bonny), Cindy Smith (Justin), Mark (Pam), Marlin (Susanne), Michael (Duane Lewis) and Becky Taft (Gary); along with stepchildren: Joette Worke, Renee Worke (Mark Ditlevson), Jeff Worke, Mike Worke (Connie Fox) and Tim Worke (Karen). Merlyn leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Merlyn attended school in Dodge County. He was active in 4-H, raised hogs, beef and was a Golden Glove Boxer. He graduated in 1953 and went on to farm and raise dairy cattle. Merlyn was best known through employment with American Breeders Service (ABS) in the bovine reproductive area.

He received numerous outstanding service awards for his devoted work in bovine improvement and received numerous mating recognitions by Genetic Mating Services (GMS). In 1986 Merlyn was recognized with a Five Millionth GMS award. In 1987 he was noted as the GMS runner-up “Evaluator of the Year.” He went on to receive his 200,000 cow “milestone award” for national breeding services. At retirement from breeding, ABS honored Merlyn by noting the impact he made on dairy operations, not only in the Midwest but in the country of Mexico where he frequently worked. ABS estimated that during Merlyn’s career he mated 360,000 bovines, which improved countless dairy herd operations.

Merlyn was known to friends and family as a kind and compassionate soul, and loved pulling pranks on friends and family. He was an avid fisherman—enjoying annual fishing trips to northern Minnesota. Merlyn loved to water ski (seen doing so up to age 75)—a passion that he shared with his children and grandchildren. Merlyn enjoyed playing cards and board games, dancing and hunting. He shared many travel adventures with his wife Mary Jo. Merlyn was faithful Minnesota Vikings fan--watching all sports, whether he was at an event or watching on television.

Visitation was held Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023 at Brick-Meger Funeral Home followed by a rosary service. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, Waseca.
