Title
Sports Analyst/Columnist

Roy Koenig started covering Owatonna High School and Steele County sports in 1991 at KRFO Radio. What began as a job quickly turned into a passion. He got a rush for each new season and still gets a few butterflies for each game night broadcast. He enjoys researching for a game and getting to know the fans, coaches and student-athletes.

The state tournament appearances, buzzer-beating finishes and memorable games are all fun. But just as enjoyable is the annual holiday concert at OHS with the Carolers, orchestra and choir. The theater department’s productions are five-star events.

Koenig appreciates the strong degree of wholesomeness in high school sports and activities. He feels they are kids out there doing their best and that mistakes will happen. They also learn from them and come right back with a positive attitude. He leaves events with a feeling of joy. In his role with Owatonna Live and the Steele County Times, Koenig has enjoyed new opportunities to interview athletes, in addition to students in non-sports extracurricular activities. His relationship with some students dates to their early days in 4-H and interviews during the Steele County Free Fair.

Koenig and his wife, Chris, have grown children. Cynthia is in the medical field while Aaron does computer programming. They have family in Colorado and Montana and love the scenery and hikes they take each summer in the west. In his spare time, he enjoys running, especially on trails, with Kaplan’s Wood being a favorite.
