Alex Malm is a staff writer with the Steele County Times, joining the staff in the spring of 2024 following the closure of Southwest News Media newspaper, his former employer in the southwest suburbs.
Malm began his career in journalism covering the 2016 Presidential election as a contributor for the Boston Herald as a college student. He traveled the country covering the election, including the first inauguration of President Donald Trump.
After college he landed a job in St. James, Minn., where he served as news editor. After a stint there he went to work for the Times’ sister paper, the Dodge County Independent. Right before the pandemic, he moved back to Rhode Island for a different opportunity before finding his way back to journalism. In 2022, his fiancé, a southern Minnesota native, decided they should move back to the land of 10,000 lakes and cold winters right before getting married.
They moved halfway across the country in a U-Haul, unloading it on a Monday and getting married that Saturday. Professionally, Malm was recently appointed to the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
