Owatonna girls hockey suffered a tough 4-0 loss to Farmington in its home opener, but rebounded well to beat Apple Valley 2-1 to earn the team its first win.

The Huskies were outclassed by Farmington in the team’s first action of the year, and found themselves playing catch-up for the entire game to a Tigers team that held a 49-12 edge in shots.

After allowing Farmington to get on the board first with an opening-period goal, Owatonna fought to keep the game close and trailed just 1-0 into the third period.

Goaltender Sawyer Born was on top of her game making a series of big saves to silence the Tigers’ offense and keep her team in the fight.

Ultimately, Farmington would go on to separate itself on the scoreboard by adding three goals late in the third period to ice the game.

The Huskies could have let the frustrating loss affect them going into their next game on Thursday, but the team looked like a completely new side against Apple Valley.

This time it was Owatonna that kicked off the scoring courtesy of a snipe by sophomore forward Alexis Noble.

Her even-strength goal was assisted by a tremendous team play that earned teammates Kendra Bogen and Gabriella Padgett their first points of the season.

Owatonna held its 1-0 lead late into the second period before Apple Valley found the game-tying goal with just 38 seconds remaining to send the game into the third at 1-1.

The final 17 minutes of play got off to a fast start with Owatonna scoring the eventual game-winning goal just 2:36 into the period.

Senior forward Genevieve Froman made the winning shot on a play assisted by Grace Mitchell and Bogen.

The Huskies’ win moved the team’s record to 1-1 overall as it awaits another home matchup against Northfield on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
