BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: 2 YOUNG CHILDREN CRITICALLY INJURED IN CRASH

Lead Summary

Two young children ages 2 and 3 were critically injured Friday afternoon in a motor vehicle crash on the east side of Steele County.
Sheriff Lon Thiele said the children were passengers in a car driven by a 31-year-old woman. Their exact conditions are unknown, but they were airlifted by Mayo One from the scene to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
The crash happened around 2:11 p.m. on SE 64thAvenue and SE 38thStreet about a quarter-mile east of Aurora Lutheran Church in rural Steele County. Both roads are gravel and controlled by a yield sign for traffic on SE 64thAvenue.
Thiele said a 2011 Ford F250 pickup driven by a 52-year-old man from Steele County collided with a 2012 Lincoln SUV driven by the woman with two children. Their names have not yet been released.
The woman was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released. The man was transported by ambulance to Owatonna Hospital. His condition is unknown.
The Steele County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol. Gold Cross Ambulance and Owatonna Fire also assisted at the scene.
Thiele said seatbelts and child safety seats were used at the time of the crash. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in either driver, according to the sheriff.
More details will be released at a later time.
